3D Maps & Augmented Reality
You're looking at a wall of mountains and wondering: "what's that peak over there?" With SportsTrackLive's augmented reality, raise your phone, point it at the relief, and get the answer at once. The 3D view aligns with the real landscape and shows the names of peaks, passes and places right above the terrain, with their elevation — together with live weather beacons and the position of other pilots and athletes, all in real time.
Where a 2D map asks you to imagine the terrain, augmented reality identifies it for you: you recognise every mountain in a precise 3D panorama, locked onto what you see in front of you, with nothing more than a smartphone in your hand.
Available in the mobile apps
3D Maps & Augmented Reality is a feature of the iOS and Android mobile apps. It uses your phone's gyroscope and compass — no accessory required.
How it works
Turn on gyroscope mode in the 3D view and point your phone at the horizon. Instead of filming a video image, SportsTrackLive aligns a high-precision 3D globe with the real world:
- The gyroscope reads the device tilt and orientation: turn or raise the phone and the virtual camera follows your gesture to the degree.
- The compass locks the scene to true north, so the peaks shown on screen match exactly the peaks you see in front of you.
- The 3D terrain is rendered from a high-resolution world terrain mesh draped with satellite imagery — you recognise every ridge, valley and pass.
A visual helper (a "straighten the phone" calibration arrow) helps you level the device for a perfect alignment.
What you see overlaid
As you sweep the landscape with your phone, SportsTrackLive overlays — right on the relief:
- Terrain names — peaks, passes, lakes and notable places, with their elevation. Labels snap to the terrain silhouette so they don't float above a foreground ridge.
- Live weather beacons — real-time wind and weather stations, with average speed, gusts and wind direction, shown as geolocated 3D beacons. Perfect for deciding on a launch or reading the conditions from a distance.
- Other users — the live position of other pilots and athletes, with their name, speed and altitude. People who are currently recording are highlighted; nearby groups are bundled into readable clusters.
Teleport to a place or a pilot
No need to hunt for a peak or a friend by hand: the Teleport feature moves the camera instantly to wherever you want. Type a name (three letters or more) in the 3D view's search and SportsTrackLive offers two lists:
- Places & terrain — peaks, passes, towns and points of interest. Pick one and the camera flies straight to it; then point your phone to explore the panorama around it.
- Pilots & athletes — find someone by name and teleport to their position to follow their flight or outing.
Results are ranked intelligently — places near your usual outings come first — and your recent searches are remembered so you can jump back in a single tap.
When to use it
Augmented reality is useful at every stage of your activity:
- While recording — raise the phone mid-flight or mid-run to identify a peak, spot a wind beacon or see who is flying around you.
- While watching after a session — replay your outing and sweep the landscape to put names back on the relief you flew over.
- While analysing someone else's activity — explore another athlete's track and understand their playground as if you were there.
Who is it for?
3D Maps & Augmented Reality shines for mountain and outdoor sports: paragliding, hang gliding, free flight, but also hiking, mountaineering, ski touring, mountain biking and any activity where knowing "what's that peak over there?" changes everything.
