Battery Saving on Google Pixel phones
Google Pixel phones run stock Android, so they are the least aggressive at killing background apps — there is no extra manufacturer power manager. In most cases SportsTrackLive records reliably out of the box.
If a recording is still cut short when the screen is off, it is almost always because the app was left under battery optimisation or because Adaptive Battery has started restricting it. See Battery Saving for why this happens.
To record reliably you only need to change two things:
- Set the app to Unrestricted battery usage.
- Make sure Adaptive Battery isn't restricting the app.
1. Set battery usage to "Unrestricted"
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps → SportsTrackLive.
- Tap Battery (under "App battery usage").
- Select Unrestricted.
TIP
On Pixel, the three options are Restricted, Optimised and Unrestricted. Always choose Unrestricted — Optimised (the default) lets Android pause the app in the background.
You can also reach this screen directly from inside the app: when SportsTrackLive shows the "Disable Power Saving" prompt, tap View App Settings, then choose Unrestricted.
2. Keep Adaptive Battery from restricting the app
Adaptive Battery learns your habits and limits apps you use less often. Setting the app to Unrestricted in step 1 already exempts it, but you can confirm the global setting:
- Open Settings → Battery → Adaptive Battery.
- You can leave Adaptive Battery on for the rest of your apps — the Unrestricted setting from step 1 protects SportsTrackLive regardless.
Recommended extra settings
These are not always required, but they make recording even more reliable:
- Keep the screen on the cockpit, then turn the screen off — do not swipe the app away. Closing the app stops recording; turning the screen off does not.
- Turn off Battery Saver while you record (Settings → Battery → Battery Saver). Battery Saver tightens background limits for every app.
- Grant "Allow all the time" location permission to SportsTrackLive (Settings → Apps → SportsTrackLive → Permissions → Location → Allow all the time, and turn off Use precise location only if you don't need accurate tracks — leave it on for recording).
- Keep notifications enabled for the app — the recording service relies on its persistent notification.
Check that it worked
After changing these settings:
- Start a recording.
- Turn the screen off and leave the phone for several minutes (a short walk is ideal).
- Come back, turn the screen on, and confirm the recording is still running and the distance and time kept increasing while the screen was off.
If the track is complete, your phone is configured correctly.
