Weather forecasts on mobile
The full SportsTrackLive forecast engine lives inside the mobile app: multi-model forecasts for any point on the map, a quick forecast card over the 3D map, and a full-screen view with a wind graph, an hourly table and the vertical cross-section pilots use to read the convective layer.
Availability
Rolling out on iOS first — the Android version is on its way.
Opening a forecast
Four ways in:
- The weather button (yellow cloud, on the social map and the cockpit) — your own position: the map glides your GPS point into view and the forecast card opens for My position.
- Tap anywhere on the 3D map — a pulsing dot marks the exact point with a "Forecast at this location" bubble. Tap the bubble and the forecast card opens for those coordinates; if the point would be hidden behind the card, the map pans it into view first. (Disabled while you are recording, so a stray tap never covers your flight screen.)
- From the Teleport search — every place in the results carries a small weather icon: it closes the dialog and opens the forecast card for that locality.
- From your activities list — the weather icon next to Replay opens the full forecast for the activity's start point (the takeoff).
The live wind marker
Once the forecast card is open from a map tap, the dot on the map grows a wind pill: the wind arrow and speed for the moment you are looking at, on the same colour scale as the forecast table. Slide the time strip in the card and the pill follows, hour by hour, with a small haptic tick. Its chevron opens the full-screen forecast.
The marker steps aside as soon as you move the map — pan, pinch or any map command dismisses it. While it is displayed, the map's idle auto-rotation is paused so the point stays put.
The forecast card
A compact panel over the map — the 3D map stays visible and interactive behind it:
- Place name (or My position), ground elevation, dusk time and the model pill ("AROME HD 14:00 · 1 h · Wed 19/08") — tap it to open the full screen, or use the Details button.
- The surface strip: one column per time step with temperature (felt too), rain, wind and gusts as continuous colour bands, and direction arrows that grow with the wind. Day headers stay readable while you scroll.
- The translucent time slot under the centre marks the moment being read — it drives the wind marker on the map.
- The 1 h switch turns the 3-hour steps into hourly ones (Premium).
Swipe the card down to close it.
The full-screen forecast
Two tabs, with the day selector always on top — each day shows its icon, min/max temperatures and a rain hint; tap a day to switch instantly.
Basic — wind view
- A fixed wind graph: bars coloured by wind strength, the gust curve above them, direction arrows on the axis and an orange "Now" line.
- Below, the hourly table: wind and gust badges on their colour scale, compass direction, arrow, a strength bar, temperature, rain and the sky icon.
- Graph and table are synchronised both ways — tap a bar or a row and the selection slides to that hour, with the detail tooltip on the graph.
Vertical cross-section
The same cross-section as the web forecast: wind by altitude with the estimated thermal ceiling (red dashed line), cloud veils and the convective layer. Choose the view ceiling (auto to 5000 m), the 100/200 m altitude step, and the Classic (white cells, orange convective shading) or Colour ramp palette.
The selector bar
The orange bar at the bottom holds:
- Model — only the models covering your point.
- Day.
- Unit — km/h, knots, m/s or mph, applied everywhere (graph, table, cross-section, marker).
- The 1 h switch (Premium).
Your model, step and unit choices are remembered for the next time.
Good to know
- All labels, units and day names follow your app language.
- Hourly (1 h) forecasts are a Premium feature — the 3-hour step is free.
- The map's auto-rotation delay is adjustable in Settings → SportsTrackLive 3D map engine (0 disables it); it is paused automatically while a weather marker is on screen.
- If your phone has a barometer, the Broadcast atmospheric pressure setting (Weather section) contributes anonymous pressure readings that help refine the forecasts — with no impact on battery life.
